Monthly Talk 7th April 2022

SPEAKER: Philip Caine

Philip is one of the most popular speakers used by U3A groups throughout the country. His talk will describe his fascinating career, beginning with him leaving school and ending with the writing of his first novel. After ten years working in the hotel business, he took a position working on offshore oil rigs in the North Sea, beginning a career that spanned over thirty years operating projects across three continents. His expertise in support and facilities management took him to many remote and hazardous locations such as Algeria, West Africa, Kazakhstan and Russia.

The end of the Iraq War in 2003 took Philip to Baghdad, where he directed the operations and project management of multiple accommodation bases for the American Coalition. This being the most challenging, hazardous and demanding of locations, he provided support for over 30,000 troops throughout Baghdad and Northern Iraq. His career culminated in the Emirates where he ran a couple of oil services companies in Dubai, Qatar & Kuwait.

During his talk, he will tell us about some of the ‘colourful’ characters he has met and the dangerous and hilarious situations in which he worked. Philip has a reputation for talking with plenty of interest, humour and inspiration.

Philip Caine was born in Barrow-in- Furness. He retired in 2015 and began writing and public speaking. He is the author of several novels and recently released a new detective series featuring a brand new character, Shackleton Blister!
