MODERN LITERATURE I
10.00am - Last Tuesday of each month (No meeting in December)

A long-standing group which continues to produce much lively talk each month!

Book choices are restricted to those written from 1945 onwards. They are chosen by each member offering their choice or choices, which are then voted on by everyone. The presenter gives a short talk at the appropriate meeting, on the subject of the book, the author, the book’s merits and their own personal views. It is then thrown open for general discussion by the whole group.

Books are both fiction and non-fiction and by any nationality, if written in, or translated into, English.

The standard aimed for is roughly the best of Man Booker, the Costa and Orange wards and the Pulitzer prize winners.

Because of space limitations the group is a small one with a maximum of 10 members.

MODERN LITERATURE II
2.30pm - Wednesday (usually but not always the 2nd Wednesday of the month)

We are a relaxed and informal group of keen readers who enjoy the opportunity to discuss books they have read.

We all make suggestions as to which books we would like to discuss and these are most often mainstream general fiction, published relatively recently, although from time to time an older work may be chosen. For the most part these will be books by English speaking authors but occasionally we have chosen something in translation. We may sometimes choose a work of non-fiction, too.

What distinguishes our group from the other book discussion groups listed is that we do not expect anyone to give an introductory presentation of the book each month. The group leader generally opens the session with a comment or a question and discussion flows easily from there.
