With a nod to all the Cookery and Baking TV programmes, the concept of ‘Cooking for Fun’, and definitely not competitively, was floated by Christine Barron at the U3A in Bath open day in 2015.
The group has been meeting ever since, and at each meeting we enjoy a coffee or tea and a good natter, and we all help the host prepare and cook the chosen dishes. It′s great fun and some lovely friendships have developed.
We have about a dozen active members and meet at the hosts home, with a maximum of six plus the host at each session. Every member of the group must take a turn at hosting.
At every meeting, group members give £3 each to the host as a contribution towards the cost of the raw ingredients.
We regularly take home samples from the dishes of the day. Examples include: Christmas mincemeat, elderflower cordial, rhubarb and ginger chutney, sausage meat supper, Thai curry, ham and lentil soup and leek and potato soup, quiche, sushi, apple whip and shortbread, Victoria sponge.
